According to a recent news article from Fox News, doctors are now able to perform a total hip replacement procedure as an outpatient surgery where the patient gets to leave the hospital on the same day.  The article follows the journey of a male patient who elected to undergo a this outpatient total hip replacement.

hip implantThis patient found his hip was getting worse as the years went by and he could no longer walk without being in extreme pain, tie his shoes, or do many other things he normally did before his hip had deteriorated.  People at work also asked why he was limping so much, and that is when he decided to undergo the operation.  Continue reading

A recent article from Medpage Today looks at new uses being proposed for a class of medications know as new oral anticoagulants (NOACs).  This is a fairly new class of medications that includes Xarelto, Eliquis, Pradaxa, and Savaysa.  These medications were designed primary to treat patients who suffer from a serious medical condition know as atrial fibrillation (Afib).

perscription-drugs-2-1160103-m-300x225As you have probably heard actor Kevin Nealon tell you during a commercial break, Afib is medical condition classified as a irregular heartbeat not caused by a heart valve defect.  A patient with Afib is at risk for developing blood clots that can cause serious and often deadly problems.  They can block the flow of blood to the brain.  This deprives the brain of much needed oxygen and is what happens when a patient has a stroke. The loss of blood can cause death or serious brain injury that can have life long effects. Continue reading

According to a recent news article from the Louisiana Record, the surviving daughter of a man from Ohio claims that her father died as a result of complications due to taking Xarelto.  The complaint was filed on April 8, 2016 in a United States District Court.  Plaintiff filed the suit against Janssen, which is the marketing arm of Johnson & Johnson and the United States marketing partner for Xarelto.  The plaintiff also named Bayer, which is the German pharmaceutical giant that manufactures Xarelto.packofpills

The claims included in the complaint are for fraud, breach of an express or implied warranty, defective design, failure to warn of a known danger, wrongful death, and negligent misrepresentation.  Continue reading

Over the past decade, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) has become a one of the most prescribed medications available, with hundreds of thousands undergoing the therapy each year. However, it should be noted that the vast majority of these patients are not taking the drug because they have the medical condition for which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug to treat.manstandingonwall

When hormone replacement therapy drugs came on the market in the 1970s, it was labeled for use with a medical condition know as hypogonadism.  These patients who suffered from hypogonadism had very low testosterone count and were typically diagnosed at a fairly young age. This is still the only medical condition that FDA approved the hormone therapy to treat. Continue reading

In a recent news feature from Tech Times, a study was discussed which suggests that patients with mental health issues tend to have more complications following total hip replacement surgery than those who do not suffer from mental illness. This study also suggests that doctors who are going to perform total hip replacement surgery on patients with mental disabilities should discuss these potential complications with the patients, and if appropriate and necessary, the patient’s family prior to preforming the operation.sad

While this may be surprising, researchers have known for a long time that mental health patients who undergo spinal surgery and heart surgery, as well as general surgery, tend to suffer more complications that patients without any mental illness.  Researchers have also found a high coloration between post-operative complications and certain mental health conditions such as depression.  Continue reading

In the United States, a total knee replacement operation is among the most commonly performed types of elective surgery, with hundreds of thousands of procedures being done each year.  There is also a trend for younger patients to undergo total knee replacement procedures.

knee-replacement---side-view-1183622-mIn the past, it was mostly an operation done on elderly individuals who have suffered through years of painful osteoarthritis.  These days, with more Americans wanting to lead an active lifestyle, patients who are decades younger are speaking with their doctors about having a total knee replacement.  This is especially true of those who have engaged in long distance running, which is often hard on joints and can lead to arthritis.  The arthritis can cause bone spurs in the knees and that will often cause severe pain and stiffness in the knee, leading to the possible need for a total knee replacement surgery. Janssen, which is a division of pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson, is the U.S. marketing partner of Bayer, the German drugmaker that manufactures Xarelto, and has released a report that its new oral anticoagulant (NOAC) is superior to Warfarin (Coumadin) in reducing the risk of ischemic stroke, according to a recent news feature from Cardiovascular Business.

tylenolThe company also claims that Xarelto is superior to Warfarin in reducing the risk of intracranial hemorrhage. The reason patients take a blood thinner or oral anti-coagulant such as Xarelto is because they are at significant risk of developing blood clots due to a medical condition known as atrial fibrillation (Afib).  These clots can form in various places, including deep in the veins of the legs.  If they form in the legs, it is a potentially deadly medical condition known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).  Continue reading

When we go to the grocery store and pick up frozen vegetables and fruit, were are normally doing this out of an attempt to lead a healthy lifestyle despite, the hectic nature of our daily routine.  This is especially true when we buy organic products so as to cut down on exposure to potentially harmful pesticides and man-made chemical fertilizers.

dangerous-goods-labels-1190908-mAnother benefit to buying frozen food is that it is typically prewashed, precut and ready to cook or blend into a smoothie, for example.  However, when not washing the vegetables, were are assuming they have been washed by the manufacturer and are safe and free of harmful bacteria. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Continue reading

Actos is a medication used to treat patients with type II diabetes by keeping their blood glucose levels down. The medication is a member of a class of drugs, but only Actos seems to be linked to an increased risk for developing bladder cancer according to a recent news feature form UPI.  There is another drug in the same class of medications known as Avandia (brand name for rosigilatazone), but that drug, while chemically similar, does not appear to cause any increased risk of bladder cancer, as is the case with Actos.  While it is normally an entire class of medications that has the common trait which causes a disease or other adverse health event, it is not unheard of for the problem to be drug specific, as is the case with Actos.

pillsAn example of an entire class of drugs that has been shown to cause serious health consequences is known as New Oral Anticoagulants (NOACs) like Eliquis, Xarelto, Savaysa, and Pradaxa.  Continue reading

There is no question that more people are getting total knee replacements than ever before.  However, unlike with an organ transplant, when a patient undergoes the procedure, they are not getting a joint from a donor, but rather having an artificial knee implanted. This artificial knee has been manufactured by one of a few medical device companies.

knee-replacement---side-view-1183622-mWhen a patient goes to their doctor and is told they will need to have a total knee replacement, the surgeon will typically tell a patient what type of device he or she would like to use and get an informed consent for the use of that particular type or model or artificial knee.  In the past, doctors just stated their preference and patients went along with that. Today, doctors are more commonly explaining the different types of artificial knees and having the patient make a choice.  One of the possible reasons for this is because of the problems they have seen with defectively-designed artificial knees.
