According to a recent news story from the Morning Call, Samsung has just issued a major recall on 34 models of their top-selling washing machines.  The reason for the recall is that a defect in these 3 million units sold (all top-loading washers) can cause the drum to lose balance.  The drum is the large spinning basket that holds the clothing in the washing machine.

inside-washing-machine-2-1468042When the drums become unbalanced, it can cause the washing machines to start to vibrate excessively.  While this just seems like it would be annoying and not dangerous, the vibration becomes so excessive that the top of the washing machine can actually separate from the bottom and come flying off.  There have already been more than 730 injuries reported, including shoulder injuries and at least one broken jaw. Johnson & Johnson is company many consumers associate with baby shampoo and Band-Aids.  While it is true  the company makes these products, the firm’s real profits come from the fact that it is a major pharmaceutical manufacturer as well as major maker of medical devices and durable medical equipment (DME), such as artificial hips and knee implants.

Sometimes a drug is used by itself, and sometimes a drug is used as one drug in a multiple drug combination used together to treat a single condition or a series of related conditions.  This is commonly referred to as a drug combo or drug cocktail in some cases, such as with HIV drugs.

According to a recent news article from the Madison St. Clair Record, a plaintiff has just filed a products liability lawsuit against the makers of Xarelto, Bayer Pharmaceuticals and Janssen Research and Development.  Janssen Research and Development was formerly known as Johnson and Johnson Pharmaceuticals Research and is still a wholly owned subsidiary of the pharmaceutical giant.  There were various other subsidiaries of both companies, such as Ortho and Bayer Healthcare AG, that were also named as defendants in this matter, which is common practice in these types of cases.

pillsIn his recent claim, plaintiff says that he took Xarelto because it was a new drug, and his doctor told him he needed a blood thinner or an oral anticoagulant.  Xarelto is a member of a relatively new class of drugs known as new Oral Anticoagulants (NOACs).  This class also included Eliquis, Savaysa, and Pradaxa. According to a recent news article from the Roanoke Times, doctors are concerned about the efficacy, safety, necessity and side effects of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) drugs for many of the men who take them.

sadFirst it should be noted that testosterone replacement therapy has become big business over the past decade, and the hormone is available in many forms, including, but not limited to, hand gels, creams, oral tablets, injections, films placed under the tongue, and even deodorant.  This article involves a woman whose husband takes testosterone hormone in the form of a skin gel, and she is worried that not only isn’t the drug helping her husband, but also it puts him in a bad mood all the time.  A doctor consulted for this article discusses how this could be happening and discusses other issues with taking testosterone replacement therapy drugs. According to a recent news article from the Cook County Record, a woman has just filed a lawsuit against Bayer and Johnson & Johnson/Janssen Pharmaceuticals, who are the makers and U.S. marketing partners of the New Oral Anticoagulant (NOAC) Xarelto.

According to 3DPrint.com, a trade publication for the 3D printing industry, a new technology may improve the patient experience for those who undergo a total hip replacement surgery.  This could be good news for many patients, since a total hip replacement procedure in now the second most common elective surgical procedure performed in the United States at around 300,000 procedures performed each year.

surgery1This new technology is being developed at McGill University, where researchers are using a 3D printer to create a new type of hip replacement medical device.  This new device is designed make the body act as if the hip implant was part of the natural bone, so as not to trigger any type of rejection process.  This will also reduce the need for any antirejection drugs. Over the past few years, we have some major ice cream product recalls as a result of listeria contamination. This time, there has been a recall of three gourmet ice cream brands due to listeria contamination fears according to a recent news release from the Consumerist.

ice creamFor those who are not familiar with listeria, it is a strain of bacteria that, if ingested by humans, can result in a serious infection known as listeriosis. This infection is generally only caused by eating foods contaminated with listeria.  A person who is infected by listeria will often develop a fever and muscle aches. The victim will also typically develop diarrhea as well as other gastrointestinal symptoms.  However, since listeria is considered invasive, the infection can quickly spread to other parts of the body. A listeria infection can be very harmful to pregnant woman and can result in a miscarriage. Continue reading

We are constantly reminded that we should make sure there are working smoke alarms in our home and to test them and change the batteries on a regular basis.  In some towns, members of the local fire department will even go door-to-door to provide this warning and to offer to come and test any smoke detectors.   They will typically use a can of spray that is designed to set off a smoke alarm if it is working properly, since the machines are designed to detect the particulate matter in the smoke.

smoke alarmIn addition to the smoke alarms, we are also warned that it is a good idea to also have a carbon monoxide detector in our homes, though often you can buy one detector that detects both smoke and elevated levels of carbon monoxide.  These devices can save the life of you and your family if they are working properly, and that is why it is so important to not only have them, but to test them.
