A recent article from INSC Magazine analyzes testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) drugs and what has happened with them over the last couple of decades. This is important because most of the information men get about the testosterone replacement hormone products comes commercials and magazine advertisements. Much of this promotional material seriously downplays the very real risks associated with taking testosterone hormone in an attempt to reverse the normal signs of male aging.

surgeryAs the article notes, very much is still misunderstood about what it means to have a low testosterone level and whether men who have these lower than average testosterone levels should be taking testosterone replacement therapy products.  The reason we are using the term products here is because that is what they really are.  The drug companies have manufactured testosterone replacement therapy drugs in many forms, such as pills, injections, sublingual films, stick deodorant, skin creams, hand gels and many more market-driven drug delivery devices. There is a pretty excellent chance that if you are a man between the ages of 40 and 70, you have probably been told by many commercials about the benefits of going on testosterone replacement therapy hormone. You may not have heard of it from your doctor, because most doctors do not appear convinced about the necessity or efficacy of testosterone therapy.  It is the drug companies and so-called T clinics that are pushing the use of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) hormone.

sadThe reason drug companies and TRT clinics are pushing testosterone hormone is fairly simple in that it is making them a lot of money.  They are also doing an excellent job of convincing men who are gaining weight, getting tired, losing muscle tone, and having a loss of libido, that these can all be problems of the past if they take testosterone replacement hormone drugs. For quite some time, it has been known that the new Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Smartphones have defective batteries and other components that can result in the devices exploding.  This can cause serious personal injury and has caused users to be severely burned. These phones are also not allowed on airplanes, since an explosion on a plane could be catastrophic for hundreds of passengers.  Not only can they not be taken as carry on, they cannot be checked in baggage, even if they are powered down.  The reason for this is because the battery can explode even when the phone is not on or being operated.

mobile phoneWhile the company has voluntarily agreed to recall the device and provide users with a refund, for whatever reason, some users are not willing to return the defective smartphones.  It seems they would rather run the risk of the phone exploding or bursting into flames in a user’s pocket and are not returning them to Samsung. In one such case analyzed recently by the United States Consumer Products Safety Commission, the makers of a crossbow have agreed to recall their device to prevent accidental injury.

It is a sad fact that many people in this county do not have health insurance.  While there are many different opinions about how to fix this issue, depending on one’s political party of choice, those without health insurance are facing real difficulties. While someone who is having a heart attack will get treated in an emergency, it will be very difficult for a patient with severe osteoarthritis to get a total knee replacement if they do not have health insurance.

surgeryThe reason for this is because even though a total knee replacement has become the most common surgical procedure in the United States (around 600,00 each year), it is still considered an elective surgery, as opposed to an emergency surgery like the one a patient might need while they are having appendicitis. In Jackson v. Ford Motor Company, a man was killed when he lost control of his 2012 Ford Focus and was in a serious car accident. His wife was also a passenger in the car the day of the fatal accident.  While she was not killed in the crash, she did sustain serious personal injuries.

carDuring the accident, after the driver lost control of the car, the vehicle reportedly moved rapidly across all lanes of travel and crossed over the center lines into oncoming traffic.  At this point, the car collided head-on with a large tow truck commonly known as a wrecker. While the driver did not survive the impact, paramedics and other first responders were able to treat his wife on the scene, so she could be transported by medevac helicopter to a local level-one trauma center.  Her injuries were considered life-threatening at that time, and many of them led to permanent medical issues. According to a recent news story from the Morning Call, Samsung has just issued a major recall on 34 models of their top-selling washing machines.  The reason for the recall is that a defect in these 3 million units sold (all top-loading washers) can cause the drum to lose balance.  The drum is the large spinning basket that holds the clothing in the washing machine.

inside-washing-machine-2-1468042When the drums become unbalanced, it can cause the washing machines to start to vibrate excessively.  While this just seems like it would be annoying and not dangerous, the vibration becomes so excessive that the top of the washing machine can actually separate from the bottom and come flying off.  There have already been more than 730 injuries reported, including shoulder injuries and at least one broken jaw. Johnson & Johnson is company many consumers associate with baby shampoo and Band-Aids.  While it is true  the company makes these products, the firm’s real profits come from the fact that it is a major pharmaceutical manufacturer as well as major maker of medical devices and durable medical equipment (DME), such as artificial hips and knee implants.

surgeonThe company owns another company known as DePuy, and that company is a major producer of hip joints, including many that have been found to be defective. According to a news article from Fox News, a jury in Dallas has just awarded victims of the Pinnacle hip implant over $1 billion in damages. Continue reading

Sometimes a drug is used by itself, and sometimes a drug is used as one drug in a multiple drug combination used together to treat a single condition or a series of related conditions.  This is commonly referred to as a drug combo or drug cocktail in some cases, such as with HIV drugs.

greenpillsPradaxa is a member of a class of drugs known as New Oral Anticoagulants (NOACs) and is used, among other things, to treat a serious medical condition known as atrial fibrillation (Afib).  As we have heard former Saturday Night Live actor tell us on the commercials for Xarelto, Afib is a condition identified as an irregular heartbeat not caused by a heart valve defect. According to a recent news article from the Madison St. Clair Record, a plaintiff has just filed a products liability lawsuit against the makers of Xarelto, Bayer Pharmaceuticals and Janssen Research and Development.  Janssen Research and Development was formerly known as Johnson and Johnson Pharmaceuticals Research and is still a wholly owned subsidiary of the pharmaceutical giant.  There were various other subsidiaries of both companies, such as Ortho and Bayer Healthcare AG, that were also named as defendants in this matter, which is common practice in these types of cases.

pillsIn his recent claim, plaintiff says that he took Xarelto because it was a new drug, and his doctor told him he needed a blood thinner or an oral anticoagulant.  Xarelto is a member of a relatively new class of drugs known as new Oral Anticoagulants (NOACs).  This class also included Eliquis, Savaysa, and Pradaxa.
